n the majority of cases turbochargers mounted on the BMW 320D – engine M47TU fail due to a fault in the car exhaust gas re-circulation system.
Whenever the turbo is replaced, the filter located in this system must be checked. This problem has already been corrected by the manufacturer in the new BMW 320D models.
For those models with the old filter (C), this must be replaced with BMW kit (D) (11127799224) which is designed to prevent the problem from reoccurring.
If the replacement is not fitted there is a risk that, after a few miles, the filter will become blocked resulting in possible further turbocharger breakdown.

Note: Also check there is no carbon build-up in the exhaust down pipe to prevent the possibility of further damage.
Other Potential Issues
Check for signs of damage to, or failure of, the inlet flap (D).
Damage to the exhaust turbine (E) and the variable geometry nozzle blades (F) can be caused by the air intake manifold flap breaking off and entering the engine combustion chamber. Damage to the piston, cylinder head and valve seats may also occur.
